NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL ’08

Enjoy caribean roots and more at the famous Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street carnival. It takes place in, oh yes, Notting Hill from Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th of August. Lots of things to explore like

– the traditional steel pan competition aka 30th National Panorama Championship that will be held at Hyde Park on Saturday from 12 – 4:30 pm. The world music stage is on fire from 5 pm until 9:30 pm. The following steel drum bands will be taking part:

Caribbean Steel International Community Group (1st year), Croydon Steel Orchestra, Ebony Steelband (defending champions), Glissando Steel Orchestra, London All Stars Steel Orchestra, Mangrove Steel Band, Metronomes Steel Orchestra, Pantasia Steel Band, Real Steel (based in Plymouth), Southside Harmonics, Stardust Steel Orchestra.

– Children’s day. The sunday is reserved for the younger generation and families. This day is the most colourful day of the carnival. The official opening is marked by the procession of steelbands. It starts at the junction of Ladbroke Grove and Kensal Road. the children’s day parade is from 10 am to 9 pm.

– Monday, the bank holiday. This is the time when it’s getting ballistic. Soundsystems are sending their vibes across Notting Hill and caribean parades change the scene on the streets again. Great atmosphere. Tune in to the sound of Channel One, Jah Observer, the great Aba Shanti I and many more.

To my mind it’s great that Boris Johnson has scrapped Ken Livingstone’s “Carribean Showcase” that was sort of competing wih Carnival in Hyde Park, but can’t we return Panorama to Kensal Road where it belongs?

It used o be great hearing steal bands in the area the night before Carnival proper kicked off.
